Always popular on the stage, Much Ado About Nothing 's history and range of theatrical interpretation is the special focus of this edition of The New Cambridge Shakespeare . The most famous actors, from the time of Garrick to the present, have appeared as the sparring lovers Beatrice and Benedick. In recent years, the play's matched plots of two pairs of lovers have been of great interest to feminists: the conventional lovers are nearly destroyed by male ideas of possessiveness and dominance, while the independent woman and her enlightened lover are strengthened by others' troubles. Mares' new edition of the play clarifies the problems of the Quarto, offers new readings of difficult passages, and preserves the light punctuation that presumably reflects Shakespeare's practice. A valuable introduction discusses the Claudio-Hero plot and annotated commentary explains the many sexual jokes that are otherwise obscured by Elizabethan language.
